Physical Characteristics

Asarum takaoi is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.1 m (0ft 3in). The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Flies. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) or semi-shade (light woodland). It prefers moist soil.

Edible Parts: Root Edible Uses: One report says that the plant is edible but does not say what part of the plant[177]. It is more likely to be the root, though some caution should be taken, see the notes above on toxicity[K].

Although no reports of toxicity have been found for this plant, at least 3 other members of this genus have reports that the leaves are toxic[7, 19]. Some caution is therefore advised in the use of this plant.
