Physical Characteristics

Amelanchier interior is a deciduous Tree growing to 9 m (29ft 6in). See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 6 and is not frost tender. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Bees. The plant is self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Edible Uses

Edible Parts: Fruit Edible Uses: Fruit - raw or cooked. A sweet taste[177, K] and a juicy texture[229, K], even before the fruit is fully ripe[K]. The fruit is produced in small clusters and is up to 8mm in diameter[229]. The fruit is rich in iron and copper[226]. This species has been seen fruiting well at Kew where the fruit ripened about 3 weeks later than most of the other species[K].
