Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) or semi-shade (light woodland). It prefers moist soil.

Miscellany Ophthalmic Salve The root is used as a poultice or salve in the treatment of boils, wounds and ulcers[207]. A tea made from the roots is used in the treatment of coughs, sore mouths and throats, inflamed gums and snakebites[222, 257]. It is suitable for use by children[257]. An infusion of the crushed roots has been used as a wash to treat sore eyes[257].
