Physical Characteristics

Artemisia japonica is a PERENNIAL growing to 1 m (3ft 3in). See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 8. It is in flower from August to October, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.

Medicinal Uses

A decoction of the leaves is said to promote a plump figure, but too much is said to be deleterious and can cause hypertension[218]. The expressed juice of the plant is used in the treatment of vaginitis[178, 218]. It is also used to treat skin diseases[272]. Theplant is used for making antitoxifying and antifebrile drugs[266].

Known Hazards

Although no reports of toxicity have been seen for this species, skin contact with some members of this genus can cause dermatitis or other allergic reactions in some people[222].
