It is in leaf all year, in flower from April to May, and the seeds ripen from July to August. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid soils and can grow in very acid soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Miscellany The leaves are mixed with tobacco and used as a snuff in the treatment of colds and headaches that affect only one side of the head[240]. The juice of the leaves is also used in the treatment of chronic rheumatism, sciatica and syphilis[240, 272]. The dried twigs and wood are used in the treatment of phthisis and chronic fevers[240].
