Rhododendron ferrugineum is an evergreen Shrub growing to 1.5 m (5ft). See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 4. It is in leaf all year, in flower in June, and the seeds ripen in August. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid soils and can grow in very acid soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Antirheumatic Diaphoretic Diuretic Homeopathy The flowers, leaves and the galls are antirheumatic, diaphoretic and diuretic[7, 9, 61]. It is used in the treatment of certain forms of arthritis and rheumatism, but can cause diarrhoea and vomiting so should only be used with expert supervision[9]. A homeopathic remedy is made from the plant[7]. It is used in treating a variety of complaints involving flatulence[7].

Known Hazards

The leaves and the galls are poisonous[61]. The pollen of many if not all species of rhododendrons is also probably toxic, being said to cause intoxication when eaten in large quantities[183].
