Vitis flexuosa is a deciduous Climber growing to 8 m (26ft 3in). See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 6. It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.

Edible Parts: Fruit Leaves Sap Edible Uses: Fruit - raw or dried for winter use[105, 177]. The fruit is about 7mm in diameter[200] and is carried in bunches. Some forms of this plant have edible leaves[177] - it is unlikely that the leaves of any forms are poisonous, but perhaps some are more palatable than others[K]. Young leaves are wrapped around other foods and then baked, they impart a pleasant flavour. Young tendrils - raw or cooked. Sap - a sweet taste[178], it can be made into a drink[105, 177].
Medicinal Uses
Restorative Tonic The fruit is restorative, strengthening and tonic[218]. The sap is used to restore youth and black hair[218]. The root is said to be warming to the sinews[218].
